Bear 71 is a stunning interactive documentary about a female bear’s movements over 8 years, after she was caught in 2001 by wildlife officers in the Banff National park, Canada. Explained by Creative Review, “The project’s co-creators Leanne Allison and Jeremy Mendes decided to turn the 1m photos taken during the time of Bear71′s monitoring into an interactive project with the help of the National Film Board of Canada’s digital studio, NFB Interactive, and have Bear71 herself as the narrator of the story (she is voiced brilliantly by actress Mia Kirshner)”, link.

I love the execution, a lot of thought has gone into how best to present this wealth of information in an interesting and interactive way. Featuring a 3d map you explore made of dots that represent the terrain, trees, rivers, roads, hills and so on – you get a real feeling of depth. Bear 71 can be seen walking around the environment, triggering video events and so on, there are also all the other ‘characters’ in the park, golden eagles, lynx, deer, cougars, wolfs, other people (shown by a webcam snapshot when you start the site) which roam the park. It really is a fascinating experience offering a unique insight to the life of a bear in a human world, the trials they face, the dangers and how we affect their world. All presented in an innovative, beautiful and interesting way. Really great work…

Site of Zeitgeist “A gallery of artistic exploration, experimentation and research into social media art, folksonomy art, interactive motion tracking art, and cell phone art.” What I like is the way you navigate the site, your view rotates and moves around the screen, I like even that you can scroll around the canvas too. The clean and minimal design accentuates the nice transitions between the sections and adds an element of movement which is really nice – it is also a very modern non-Flash site which also works well on iPads.

Portfolio of Creative Director and designer Ian Coyle the man behind projects such as Andrew Zuckerman: Bird and Nike Better World. Really nice way of presenting work and breaking the norm – using a notation style highlighting interesting parts of the project, from snippets of code to snapshots of navigation, and the things that made the project special.  It takes an exploratory approach and is nice to scroll around and find the details. Very cool, modern and fresh portfolio with great work…

Wicked portfolio of Toronto based digital agency JAM3. Using very cool transitions and an interesting particle based 3d effect, every part of this site is slick and smooth. All the interactions have been carefully designed and animated, I love the transition between the projects and section with your view zooming around and the interface building and disappearing, all so detailed. Really great, modern and fresh portfolio showing what Flash can do.

Fun upbeat site promoting Aldo’s A/W 2011 range of footwear. Simple promotion – play 3 short games – i.e. pick a lucky shoe, and if you win all 3 you get a discount and might win ‘shoes for life’. Really simple site, but a lot of fun – brought to life by sound, music, and animation. Nicely put together and designed with a real emphasis on an upbeat and fun look and feel.

Site promoting the film ‘From The Rough’. Looks great and works nicely but I think what is important is that the whole site is non Flash – which is quite interesting – as it has non of the clunkiness and has all the nice smooth animations and transitions you might expect. It is quite impressive to see. The whole section containing the information about the site is quite a marvel allowing you to move around and explore – all in all a great showcase for what you can do right now with non Flash technology.

Fun site for Up2U chewing gum from the makers of Mentos. Giving you the choice to view a scene between various scenarios such as an astronaut or a hip hop artist, zombies and a game show, where your actions are the same in each – all based around the concept of the gum – 2 flavours – 1 pack. I like the way you swap between the scenes using your mouse to drag between them, with your hands and so on perfectly matched between the scenes. It looks great too, and nicely crafted.

Stylish portfolio of Keith Driesson. Very nice HTML & jQuery site with incredibly slick transitions and full screen images, very minimal but the animation brings it all to life. It works nicely and he knows how to present his work well, a clean and stylish modern portfolio.

The official site for Fox Searchlight’s new film Martha Marcy May Marlene. Finally a recent film release that has an experiential site – sounds, 3d planes, strange video – all nicely put together to create a fun to explore site. A portrait of the main character is exploded into 3d images which merge together to create words and video clips from the film. Well made and imagined, I really like the way videos are presented and the way the 3d images move around to create words – really nice.

Great interactive short film promoting the new Range Rover Evoque. You control ‘Henry’ with basic choices – i.e. choosing a cafe for breakfast, picking a girl’s nail polish, deciding to help a girl to her apartment with bags. These decisions mount up and create humourous outcomes, getting kidnapped, dodging grandma’s bullets. Love the simplicity, but instead of simply clicking in a direction you drag Henry to the direction you want – simple but it really works nicely. Each scenario is unexpected and funny – and very engaging – you want to play again and again. The choices you make create a customised version of the Range Rover Evoque, even the way this is presented is funny – taking hints from the path you took – really simple and effective. Really nicely made and realised example of car customiser – using humour, high quality video and interactivity to create an engaging experience.

Really interesting concept for Levi’s using the Google Maps interface to explore a journey made by 3 band members wearing Levi’s. Featuring YouTube videos, photos, and commentary from their trip across the items they are wearing – a nicely abstract idea – with each little stain or nick attributed to a story from the trip. Nice photography and a quite absorbing site, with great illustrations – great fun to explore and use.
